Carnegie Hall’s Link Up: The Orchestra Swings is an interactive assembly that brings the magic of swing music to students in grades 3-5. This program dives into the distinctive rhythms, musical styles, and history behind swing, a genre deeply rooted in jazz but also present in orchestral music. Students will learn how orchestras can swing, explore the elements that create this unique rhythmic feel, and experience the exciting connection between jazz and classical music.

Through hands-on activities, engaging demonstrations, and an immersive performance, students will discover the art of swing from multiple angles. The program culminates in an interactive performance with both an orchestra and a jazz ensemble, where students can participate and experience first-hand the magic of musicians playing “in the pocket.” This dynamic, high-energy performance will help students understand and appreciate the world of swing music and inspire them to explore its rhythms, sounds, and cultural significance.

This free assembly is part of Carnegie Hall’s Link Up program, designed to make music come alive for students, fostering a love for music and encouraging hands-on learning. It’s an educational and fun experience you won’t want to miss!
