About Jean Sibelius' Symphony No. 2
The Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43, by Jean Sibelius was started in winter 1901 in Rapallo, Italy, shortly after the successful premiere of the popular Finlandia, and finished in 1902 in Finland. Sibelius said, "My second symphony is a confession of the soul."
Sibelius scored his second symphony for an orchestra consisting of standard instruments. 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, and strings.
It is written in four movements:
- Allegretto – Poco allegro – Tranquillo, ma poco a poco ravvivando il tempo all'allegro – Poco largamente – Tempo I – Poco allegro (in D major)
- Tempo andante, ma rubato – Poco allegro – Molto largamente – Andante sostenuto – Andante con moto ed energico – Allegro – Poco largamente – Molto largamente – Andante sostenuto – Andante con moto ed energico – Andante – Pesante (in D minor)
- Vivacissimo – Lento e soave – Tempo primo – Lento e soave – (attacca) (in B♭ major)
- Finale: Allegro moderato – Moderato assai – Meno moderato e poco a poco ravvivando il tempo – Tempo I – Largamente e pesante – Poco largamente – Molto largamente (in D major)
It is his longest symphony, with a duration of approximately 45 minutes.
About Jessie Montgomery's Banner
“Many composers would have been wary of a commission to write a tribute to the 200th anniversary of ‘The Star Spangled Banner’. Ms. Montgomery readily accepted the challeng. Writing an urgent, inventive piece titled ‘Banner’, she daringly transforms the anthem, folding it into a teaming score to create a musical melting pot.” — New York Times
